You seem to confuse "compact" with "compress". During folder compaction
all messages in a folder which have been marked as deleted are stripped
from the mailbox file. This has nothing to do with compressing (aka
zipping) a file.

Simply copy the (uncompressed) mailbox files to your ~/Mail directory
and restart KMail. The mailboxes will be automatically imported.
Please note, that if you overwrite old mailbox files you have to delete
the corresponding .*.index* files.

Subject: kmail does not accept older versions of zipped/compressed mailboxes
From: t@inode.at

Package: kmail
Version: 1.3.2 (using KDE 2.2.2 )
Severity: normal
Installed from: Debian Package 4:2.2.2-11 (3.0)
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.4 (Debian prerelease)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.17
OS/Compiler notes:

when selecting "compact all folders on exit" and replacing the mail folders of kmail \
with older versions of compressed mail folders (from some earlier kmail backup), \
kmail will create new folders again, ignoring the replaced folders. after unzipping \
the folders with gunzip, it accepts them normally.

in general, there should be some function implemented to import older kmail-backups \
or mailboxes to reintegrate them in the current mailbox.
