When a folder has unread messages in it, switching to that folder automatically \
selects the newest unread message.

This means that that message gets marked as read, whether the user wants to read it \
or not.

If the user immediately opens another folder, they may not even notice that the \
message has been marked read without them reading it.

Another reason to consider this a bug, not a wish is that this could completely \
prevent a user using kmail. If the user uses inline attachements and the first \
message in the inbox contains attachments that cause kmail to crash when displaying \
them (the bug wouldn't have to be in kmail, just in a library used to render the \
inline attachment). Whenever kmail is opened, this mail is automatically selected and \
it crashes.

I think the default behaviour should be that when you enter a folder, no message is \
selected but the list view is positioned so that the first unread message is visible. \
Or possibly that the message that was last selected in that folder is selected again \
but selections are forgotten between sessions.
