I get the same problem, since changing from Mandrake 8.0 to 8.1 (which has 
KDE 2.2.1 & KMail 1.3.1). I set up the POP account with username / password. 
Check Mail In works - exit KMail - re-run KMail - Check Mail In prompts me 
for my POP password - ie, it's forgotten it.
