What about this:
In the context menu, have an entry "Show as HTML (insecure!)" which does the 
enabling/disabling of HTML, external references, etc. for this mail only; 
e.g. enable HTML - render Mail - disable HTML

(I admit that I know nothing about the display pipeline, so just ignore me if 
this is impossible)
