Many mail-readers have a seperate reader-window which allows you to select the 
message without automatically reading it. There were some other mails 
recently that ask for this as well.

Current KMail works very good if you go through your mail sequentially but if 
you want to selectively read a few messages only the fact that you 
automaticaly read a message whenever you happen to select it is a severe 
drawback IMO.
