As we don't have problems with the SuSE 7.2 packages of KDE 2.2.1 at the 
university (so the SuSE packages seem to work) and as there was 
absolutely nothing changed in the SMTP code between 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 the 
problem must be somewhere in your network configuration.

Please use a network traffic monitor like ethereal to find out what's 
happening.
