How should KMail know about the addresses it should remove? Should it
scan all the addresses you entered for your various identities?

That's what filters resp. folder specific identities are there for. I
can currently think of two ways to solve your problem:
1.) Filter all messages which are sent to linux-kernel@borntraeger.net
into a separate folder and set the identity of this folder to your
linux-kernel@borntraeger.net identity.
2.) If you don't want to filter the linux-kernel messages to a separate
folder, then use a filter to set the identity to your linux-kernel
identity for all messages which are sent to
linux-kernel@borntraeger.net.
