This is a suggestion I made to the LyX people and they implemented it. I 
noticed that KLyX doesn't seem to have it, though.

The mark in the document (i.e., where the blinking vertical cursor bar is) should 
correspond to the inter-character gap CLOSEST to the current mouse click, not 
the one to the left. In other words, if one clicks slightly to the right of 
a character's center, the mark should be set to the right of that character. 

This is what most word processors do (Word, WordPerfect, etc.)
This makes sloppy selection of characters easier and is very easy to implement:

In the code that determines where the mark should go, just increment the 
boundary by half the width of the character to its right.

Just a suggestion...
