I reported the same problem a while ago. If you click with the mouse
on the status line (instead of using Meta-X), entering "accent-..." works
fine. But of course, this does not help for binding this function to 
a key in the bind file. 
It would be nice to get this fixed, so I could use klyx instead of lyx.
