Im just playing devils advocate a bit.

It looks very promising.

In answer to your question plash does not requre UnionFS
It runs in userspace
How it works under the hood, it creates a chroot where you can grant access
to secified files as required,  It also highjacks the filechosedr dialgoue
and gives read/write to selected files that a user opens

The dev Mark Seaborn has been very helpful (from my second hand knowledge)
and has been patching issues as probono finds them
