Yes I realize this.  I usually do:

wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=disable
wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable
wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid=<ssid sniffed> authtype=opensystem

This resets the card and lets me associate after being in monitor mode.  I do
it all the time and it works perfectly.  There are just certain access points
that will never let me associate with them, even after a clean boot without
entering monitor mode.
