What exactly do you mean by "Open an image preview"?
Activate previews for some file type? The file preview view profile? Or just 
"let konqueror generate previews (thumbnails) for the files"?

I cannot reproduce this, I can always select the menu entries, regardless of 
whether a preview is being generated or not.
