It does use /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf implicitly by using the standard 
lookup functions of the system. What you encounter here is that if there is 
no dot in the hostname, Konqueror thinks it's a search query and asks google 
for it (or whatever search engine you configured under Configure Konqueror -> 
Enhanced Browsing). To get to your LAN host without domain name, prepend 
http:// to the hostname and voilà, it will work. I'll leave the wishlist item 
open though, maybe /etc/hosts could be consulted before resorting to a search 
engine?
