well, the good thing is, you can easily jump in and help improving KDE.
Yes, it takes some time to get into it if you haven't programmed before,
but you get addicted to it very quickly, believe me :)

If you get stuck on some problems, the mailinglists and #kde on 
irc.kde.org will try the best to help you.
