If aRTs exists everywhere, it would be a good addition, though not maybe a
subsitute for our many native implementations... we don't really like to
redistribute libraries for our code to work.  Still, we would like to
natively support any standard or de facto standard API.

No, unfortunately this feature depends on features present in the player
itself which aren't implemented for unix yet.  I don't know when this will
be rectified, but I would love to...
