Well, maybe the suddenly disappearing menu items are actually no big problem ?
I don't think that users change the view mode often.
At least I change the views until I find the one I like and then keep it for a
long time.

For "foreign" views a template-xml file could be provided, which produces the
standard menu structure if nothing is changed.
