When accessing a FAT32X partition KFM would lock up without doing a core
dump. All desktop icons on all desktops would turn black and the only
way out was to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. Then I had to unmount the affected
partition before restarting the x server. The way it would happen was as
follows:

1. The partition was mounted at /mnt/dosc (NOTE: The actual mount point
does not matter. The problem also shows if I mount at /dosc only then
the lock up will happen when I try to access the / directory.)

2. The partitions that I tested were FAT32X partitions that had been
prepared by WIN98

3. I had changed the KFM icon for this partition to a blue tinted folder
to indicate it was a WIN/DOS partition (NOTE: it does not matter what
icon you use the problem will show up if anything creates a .directory
file in the partition)

4. When I try to access the /mnt directory KFM shows :Working at the
bottom, the gear stops turning, icons for the directories prior to the
dosc show up but clicking on them has no effect, the KFM window cannot
be closed, switching to another desktop shows all icons in black, no
other programs can be started, other programs that were running still
seem to work ok.

5. Also I tried changing the folder icon for a directory within the VFAT
partition and the problem followed the location of the .directory file.
For example if the .directory file existed in /mnt/dosd/news then I
could browse to /mnt ok, but as soon as I browsed to /mnt/dosd the lock
up would occur.

I was able to track this back to the existence of a .directory file in
the affected partitions. When I deleted this file the problem stopped. I
can recreate the problem on all of the FAT32X drives that I have. The
FAT32X partitions are set as VFAT in fstab. It does not seem to matter
what is in the .directory file the problem happens even when that file
is a 0 length file.

I have duplicated this problem on Linux-Mandrake 6.1 and RedHat 6.0 Both
with KDE 1.1.1 running on PIII 500 with 256M ram and on Linux-Mandrake
6.1 with KDE 1.1.1 running on 486Dx 100 with 32M ram.
