When I click on and open a directory on the right-hand pane, the directory
on the left-hand pane does not automatically open up as it does in gmc and
Windows Explorer.

Even more important, since it does not open up automatically, it makes it
difficult to copy a file from one directory to another when the two
directories are at the same level but buried somewhere deep in the
directory structure.  To do this, you have to click down the directory
structure from the left-hand pane as well.
