I see no need for an option.  If the user doesn't want tabs, they don't 
have to use them.

Well, since it is possible to DnD a file from the current tab to another
tab and that tab will open, it appears that tabs would have some use.
Without that feature they would have limited uses.

IIUC, the target for Dolphin is to be a file manager that can't browse.
