Sarissa.getDomDocument is, as u said, a wrapper for 
document.implementation.createDocument. All you need to do is pass it a 
namespace and QName like

Sarissa.getDomDocument("my.namespace.uri", "prefix:name");

I dont know y you are having trouble adding the documentElement manually.
