Have you really tried the patch? The open file dialog has a Location lineedit where you can enter http://www.kde.org and it will come up fine in Konqueror. For directory opening you are right, you should use the Location bar. But even in the previous version you had to enter the directory and couldn't use the file select button to open a dir, only to open a file.
