I beg my pardon but where do you see shadows in KDE icons?
My favourite icons are Konq's "left" and "right" arrows - there is no shadow 
in them. Pls point out where I am wrong.

BTW: yes, I agree with Simon - you can have shadow using SVG.
IIRC Kontour allows you to make shadows, but may be it should be improoved 
somehow.

ok, IMO we should take a look at Nautilus and "emblemes".
Emblemes are, in fact, SVG graphics, and they are rendered over "standard" 
PNG icons using librsvg. (I attach one emblem to this mail for your 
reference.)
I guess this saves number of icons and disk usage in general.
