I completely disagree. The project name is just that, a (user specified) name
for the project. We do need a GUI for changing that name though to make people
aware they can change it.

One of my most-hated mis-features in Eclipse is that I can't open 2 projects
with the same name from two different places. (In fact this causes a major
headache for the eclipse-based stuff I work on).

No need to force a new name, just keep the one we have. We can always add a (2)
to the item's text if we want to of course. But that shouldn't be part of the
name.
