Summary: cannot open/save files in any kde application after
upgrade
Product: kdevelop
Version: unspecified
Platform: Debian testing
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: crash
Priority: NOR
Component: file selector
AssignedTo: kdevelop-bugs@kdevelop.org
ReportedBy: fgbrose@gmx.net
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
I am not even sure whether I am posting this bug on the right application,
because it affects *all* kde applications I use.
After upgrading from kde 3.5 to kde 4.2.2 I cannot open any files using the
file chooser. For example, starting kate and then pressing the "open" button, I
get the file chooser. Whichever file I select, this causes the file chooser to
crash (as in freeze) and kate becomes unkillable (the window disappears but the
process keeps running), i.e. "killall kate" has no effect.
Reproducible:
1. Open Kate.
2. Click "Open".
3. Choose any file.
I noticed that when I disabled compositing, this situation worsened - I could
not even save files, if it meant I would have to specify the destination
through the file chooser. I could not even choose files to attach to emails in
kmail.
Reproducible:
1. Open kate.
2. "Save As"
3. Choose any existing file or specify a new file name.
It seems that anything that makes use of the file chooser in kde freezes in the
same way.
I am using a Dell Latitude D830 laptop using the amd64 debian packages for
testing/unstable. Graphics card is: nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M.
I also tried to open kate through gdm:
1. $ gdm kate
2. $ gdm run
3. in kate, click "open"
4. choose any file
Again kate freezes and I cannot get it to close. I cannot get back to the gdm
command prompt.
Any help/workaround will be much appreciated. Is it possible to select a
different default application for all the file choosing dialogues?
