final note for anyone reading this, the key factor seems to have been the non \
standard use of autotools, as pointed out by Andreas. I got round this by setting \
Project Options | Configure Option | Build directory to be the same as top source \
directory.

This means it will not be possible to use different build profiles for the same \
project. That as noted is a gimp restriction not a kdevelop bug.
