I also think the "Normal" mode should be the default.
As far as I can judge (of course, some usability test would be cool)
the cases that would benefit from automatic indentation are more than
the cases that would suffer from it. Think about it. Besides, it gives
a warm feeling of "this app is smart", which will boost Kate in
user votings against vim and emacs ;-)
