Commenting out line 218 in grepviewwidget.cpp make searches for the pattern 'y' \
succeed:  Line 218: // pattern.replace(QRegExp("'"), "'\\''");

In answer to comment 2 above, the help box that is displayed for the pattern field  \
tells you to enter the regular expression in the pattern field, and details the \
metacharacters available. Also, the pattern field remembers the entered patterns the \
next time kdevelop is used; the template field does not. That's not user friendly if \
you do a lot of similar regexp searches.

Perhaps there should be a check box in the dialog for regular expressions search, \
that controls whether the pattern has the grep metacharacters escaped or not (the \
escaping is done in line 217 of grepviewwidget.cpp)
