got a solution:
configure kdevelop->documentation -> documentation collections->add
i added a qt collection (/usr/share/qt3/doc/html/qt.dcf) and after that update index worked and gave search results. could anybody explain?
the error-message is obviously correct ... and useless+misleading. a message saying "please check the search-column at least for one collection" would be far more helpful.
