However, you might want to put it further down, e.g. CVSROOT/somedir/projname/. In the New Project Wizard, if you specify the repository as CVSROOT/somedir you get a CVS error (which is probably correct!). If, instead, you specify the module name as somedir/projname then it ignores the somedir/ and places it directly in CVSROOT/projname/. I think it should be able to place it in CVSROOT/somedir/projname.
