After a while you might have a large bunch of snippets. You could then sort them and collapse everything except what you really need. In my case I could close the stuff for porting from java until the next project. After all, I found out that we c++ coders can learn a lot from java ;-) And yes, in the meantime I also recognized the abbreviation settings. But these are two things that do basically the same thing in different places: inserting text by keystroke or by mouse click. Why not merge them? Snippets are also often only useful for certain programming languages and could be hidden automatically when not applicable.
