One or a few (usually not more than 3) at a time. I do not filter that 
often, so yes you could say I wait for processing to finish. In case of 
connection problems, it happens that the filtered message is not uploaded 
through. When kmail has one of its fits (no mail fetching and the like), 
filtering also does not work. So, I would not say it is reliable enough. 
But it nevertheless works well enough to use.
