I'm just wondering whether that was before I added the last bit, about setting 
your Default addressbook.  Do your addressbooks show up in any situation at 
all?

What addressbooks do you see in SystemSettings > Advanced tab > KDE Resources, 
and are they all enabled?

Do you get any sort of error messages at all that relate to kontact or 
kaddressbook (including akonadi or nepomuk)?
