It puts this information in the mailing list archives On Wednesday 30 May 2007 14:43:05 John Fellin wrote: > Kpilot will not detect my Zire31. Tried different distros > also. My pilot is set for Local and Cradle /Cable. It plugs into a USB > port. How can I confirm that my usb port is active on a Linux system. The way to check this is to follow the system log a bit. In a terminal / konsole window, type tail -f /var/log/messages You'll see the last few system messages and then it will sit there, waiting for new messages. ("tail" shows the tail end -- last lines -- of a file, and "-f" makes it follow the file, waiting for new things to be appended). Right, so we'll give it some new system messages: connect the Palm and hit the hotsync button. You ought to get some indication of what is going on; you might post the messages to this mailing list, or drop by on #kpilot on irc.kde.org (in IRC). One thing that often trips people up is the visor kernel module; it's not loaded by default in many implementations. Try modprobe visor as root (depending on your Linux system, this might be best done as "sudo modprobe visor" or as some other command). Then connect the Palm (again) and hit hotsync button (again). Any difference? If it all works, you should see some messages naming device nodes that are created, like /dev/ttyUSB1 ; an extra way of testing if things are ok is to -- once you know that /dev/ttyUSB1 is being used, or some other one -- type the following but *don't hit enter yet*. pilot-xfer -l -p /dev/ttyUSB1 now hit the hotsync button, count three or say "minneapolis saint paul" and then hit enter. Timing is everything :( > PS. First computer I ever built was a Timex Sinclair.
