Hmm. Simply copying the configuration files, i.e. in particular 
~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc, and copying the imap cache 
~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/imap should have preserved the important tags.

My general advice is always to copy ~, i.e. the whole home folder, or at 
least all of ~/.kde.
