May I suggest a Very Low Tech approach ?

[rationale]
To get rid in kmail of a folder related to a past client/project, and store it
in the documents general archive folder of said project outside the scope of
kmail, using only drag'n'drop.

[Solution]
1. Be sure all mails related to project/client are in the same folder.
[re-name it if needed]
2. Close Kmail
3. Open Konqueror, RMB-Click on bottom border & choose "split window"
[Don't forget to allow "show hidden files"]
4. Browse through the kmail mail folders to the folder you want to remove
5. In the other pane, browse through the target location for archive
6. Create a Folder appropriately named like "[name of past project].mails"
7. Slide the un-needed anymore folder, including its .index & index.ids
& .index.sorted files while holding 'Shift'.

...VoilĂ , the folder isn't in kmail anymore, it's in your global project
archive, you can browse its content & click-open using kmail_view.

[cons]
Finding the right folder may be a hassle. Folders tree are not straightforward
in kmail. Forgetting to move .index files & such may lead to confusion by
kmail software. Titles of emails aren't displayed. To keep your project
archive lean & clean you need to create a folder so that all, folder + .index
files end up in a single location. I don't want to imagine what could happen
if one forgets to close kmail before taking these steps.

[Pros]
Using splitted Konqueror window & bookmarks, one can achieve real-fast archive
of unused kmail folders. No export issues, no multiple menu/actions to crawl
to. Overrides the lack of "save as" at global Folder Level in kmail. Can be
compressed, stored anywhere, the reverse procedure would revive it in kmail
in one drag'ndrop.

Hey listers, I didn't invent the wheel indeed but...
Doesn't that offer a dumb-user a real clean solution ?

I am very good @ dumb-user solutions. A bit too good maybe, I must be dumb.
