A little more on this ...

If it start Korganizer standalone and deselect the imap resource and 
then quit, I'm able to start Kontact successfully. From within Kontact 
I can then renable the imap resource and see my events. If I leave the 
imap resource selected Kontact will crash on the summary page the next 
time it's launched.

So it does appear to be an interaction between the Kontact Summary view 
and remote calendar resources.
