Well, heck.  Um.  I'd suggest using a different kernel.  I don't know if you 
can find one provided by ubuntu for that or if you'll have to brave new 
territory and compile one by hand yourself.  But I'd definitely recommend 
upgrading to kernel 2.6.17.13 before you do anything else.
