I have noticed in the and other contexts that when an attached message is 
opened it appears to continue to be treated by Kmail as an attached object 
of the parent message, rather than a full fledged message in its own right.

I think this is the issue underlying your "Save All" difficulty.  I suspect 
that if you did some research on the broader impacts of this design 
approach you might have a better shot at motivating change.

I wonder if the object model will be different for KDE 4?
