I found the answer to this on another newsgroup and have pasted it below. It 
worked for me with Firefox 1.5 and Kde 3.5.

In Firefox you can change it if you write about:config in the location field 
and then browse down to this line: network.protocol-handler.external.mailto

Make sure its value is true and if not double click and it goes bold and the 
value changes to true.

Now rightclick the line and choose "New"|"String" and in first window that 
comes up you write (or copy/paste) this "Preference name": 
network.protocol-handler.app.mailto

Next window ask for an value and here its kmail and thats it.
