As an aside, I normally set up a separate data partition and put /home there. 
Then you can make changes to the OS independent of your data, and you can 
easily back up your data without having to worry about things like temp 
files. It also works very well, in a network environment, to NFS mount /home 
to all computers. Then no matter where you log in, you have the same home. If 
we lived in Windows world we would make up some jargon for this like "roaming 
profiles".
