I use IMAP folders mainly to sort incoming mail (automatically) so that
I can read them as I find it appropriate.
Means, I have folders for mailing lists, for people who mail me often,
or for special topics.
Procmail does the filtering by scanning header lines.
And the rest, I do manually.

Nevertheless (or because of this?), I don't have huge folders,
and thus have no experience with.

I'm watching it, too. Admins in our firm wait for a neat solution.

No, they won't. At least in my setup. All folders are generated on the
IMAP servers, all mail (which is not due to the shredder) stays there.
I can't see a need for mirrors (which tend to create inconsistencies).

Securing the IMAP folders / backup strategy is another issue,
but it's certainly no good idea to fetch mails from an IMAP server
as you would if it were a POP3 server.

I'll demonstrate:
new mail A is on IMAP server.
I fetch it reading with kmail.
I decide, I'll need it some day in the future, therefore store it in
local folder X.
Another day, I access my IMAP server again, but from @ work,
seeing mail B, which needs urgent reply.
But I should relate to contents of mail A, which is @home in
local folder :-(

How I handle it:
new mail A is on IMAP server.
I fetch it reading with kmail.
I decide, I'll need it some day in the future, therefore store it in
IMAP folder X.
Another day, I access my IMAP server again, but from @ work,
seeing mail B, which needs urgent reply.
I must relate to contents of mail A, which is in folder X on IMAP server.
I access it easily :-)

In fact, this happens to me even at home, because I read mails
once from my towerPC, next time using my notebook.
I disliked the fact of not having old mails available, that I installed
an IMAP server so that I can use it from both machines (LAN).
