I think exporting as vCard 3.0 is much better. After all that's also the 
format the contacts are stored in internally. Of course you could also 
simply copy/backup the file ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf.

BTW, the folder ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc always contains a few backup 
copies of the address book. So you don't even need to make a backup 
(although it's never wrong to make a backup).
