With KMail 1.6.x you could create some search folders by searching for 
unread and new messages. You can save a search by changing the Search 
folder name and pressing Rename (or Open if you also want to jump to 
the search folder).

With the current development version (which will become KMail 1.7) you 
can select to only view messages with a certain status. The downside of 
this approach is that the view filter is reset each time you switch 
folders.
