		<title>A new idea is born</title>
		<para>
		The KDE community, made up of developers and avid users, has a
		new project: the KDE Zine. Just a few short weeks ago, discussion
		about the possibilities of creating a magazine cropped up on the
		KDE-promo mailing list. Today, the discussion has spawned its own
		mailing list, the beginnings of a Web site located at <link \
src="http://zine.kde.org"  alt="Zine Homepage" \
cat="kde_websites">zine.kde.org</link>, and a small group of volunteers who are busy \
working out myriad details involved in bringing a print publication to life.
		</para>

		<para>
		(Note: the author of this article is a volunteer in the KDE Zine
		project.) For those of you who just hitched a ride down to earth on
		Mir, KDE is an Open Source graphical desktop environment for Unix
		and Linux workstations. The KDE environment supports a number of
		useful or just plain fun applications <link src="http://apps.kde.com/"
		alt="KDE applications website" cat="kde_websites">apps.kde.com</link>,
		including the <link src="http://apps.kde.com/na/2/info/id/531"

</para>

		<para>
		Herve Lefebvre's March 12, 2001, post <cite>what about a
		web-magazine?</cite> to <link \
src="http://master.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kde-promo"  alt="KDE-Promo" \
cat="mailinglists">KDE-promo</link>, a mailing list for those interesting in \
promoting the K Desktop Environment (KDE), started a chain reaction of \
brainstorming. It was such a popular topic of discussion that they had to create a \
separate mailing list just for the zine idea. Most of the details of the
		project are still being debated: No official publication premier
		date has been set, and the exact methods of distribution are up in
		the air, but the first project team meeting date has been set for
		later this week and will take place on IRC.
		</para>

		<para>
		At the meeting, those who have volunteered to be a part of the
		project will come with agendas for their "departments" and the team
		will make decisions and commit to dates, as well as work on filling
		gaps in the team. And that's where anyone interested in supporting
		KDE can get involved -- this project is most definitely not for
		coders only, and they need more volunteers to get the magazine off
		the ground.
		</para>
	</page>
	<page number="2">
		<title>...and it grows</title>
		<para>
		Chris Molnar, a team member working on several aspects of
		production, says that content and reader suggestions are the two
		biggest needs right now. <cite>We have designers, and translators will
		show up. We need writers, and we need input from users as well.
		Maybe a Web form asking, 'If you would like to see anything in a
		KDE print magazine, what would it be?' This may give us article
		ideas.</cite>
		</para>

		<para>
		Christine "Tink" Bastian, the lead designer for the KDE Zine
		project, says that articles written by developers would be a great
		boon to the publication. <cite>It would be a shame if this project would
		go down the drain because of lack of enthusiasm on their part. I
		know how hard it is to get developers to write anything besides
		their code -- I have to bug most of them for weeks to get them to
		submit their interview answers for the series I do on <link
		src="http://www.kde.org/people/people.html" alt="People behind KDE"
		cat="kde_websites">'The People Behind KDE'</link>.</cite>
		</para>

		<para>
		Ideas for content being bandied about include interviews with
		people of interest to the KDE community, tips and tricks for users,
		and more technical development how-tos.
		</para>

		<para>
		Molnar, a Linux and Open Source instructor and KDE user, thinks
		that the project will take off and gain momentum well, <cite>if we can
		get enough together for our first issue -- then people will come
		out of the walls and want to write.</cite>
		</para>

		<para>
		If all goes well with putting the first issue together, the next
		challenge will be to garner subscribers. Molnar is working on
		making the Zine available on PDAs and through non-traditional
		Internet channels such as print-on-demand. The KDE Zine will also
		be available online at <link src="http://zine.kde.org" alt="KDE Zine"
		cat="kde_websites">zine.kde.org</link>).
		</para>

		<para>
		The Zine project also needs to line up distributors --
		bookstores and others sales outlets willing to carry and sell the
		publication. The team is considering many ways of getting the
		KDE Zine in front of as many people as possible, and is open to
		suggestions from KDE supporters. The KDE Zine project is important
		in furthering KDE's market share, because, as Molnar aptly puts it,
		<cite>People like printed documents; they provide a fixed reference
		point, and something to work from. Also, this sounds a little
		sick,</cite> he quips, <cite>but a lot of people like having something
		to read in the restroom.</cite>
		</para>
	</page>
	<conclusio>
		<para>
		If you're interested in finding out more about the KDE Zine
		project, there's a list of volunteers and contact information at
		<link src="http://promo.kde.org/zine.php" alt="Zine-Contact" cat="kde_websites">
		promo.kde.org/zine.php</link>.
		Email one of them working in the area in which you're interested.
		If you'd like to attend the IRC meeting, contact meeting
		coordinator Darian Lanx for the exact date, time, and location. (Editorial Note: \
The meeting has already commenced. You may still contact Mr. Lanx for any further \
questions you might have). Mr. Lanx has also offered to field comments and questions \
from those interested in sponsorships or helping out with distribution.

		<title>The aim of kdewomen</title>
		<para>
		KDE women<footnote id="1" /> was born a few weeks ago with the following goal:<lbr \
/> <cite>we want to build an international KDE forum for women by providing a place
		where women can present what they already contribute to KDE and where women, who \
want to contribute, can find a starting point. But the content on these pages is not \
only for women but for everybody. By doing this project we actively want to \
contribute to the success of KDE.</cite>
		</para>
		<para>
		This is another step which shows the actual growth of KDE with the emergence of \
more and  more projects.
		</para>
		<para>
		So I went to interview one of the main character involved.

		<title>Interview with Katie, the dragoness</title>
		<para>
		Katie the dragoness is getting very popular (see her picture on the right) and she
		accepted to answer a few questions:
		</para>

		<interview>
			<bigcite>Well, of course, I am the boss.</bigcite>
			<question from="annma">What is your role in that project?</question>
			<answer from="Katie">Well, of course, I am the boss. My boyfriend Konqi is very
			happy that at last I am getting involved in computers and KDE. What I like to
			do most is to burn CDs and spit firewalls.</answer>

			<question from="annma">What can I find on the website?</question>
			<answer from="Katie">My team put together some nice informations, very useful \
especially for beginners. Some tutorials, the Tips and Tricks page, reviews \
(software, books), useful links are waiting for you. We plan to have a variety of \
tutorials and information on the website, many more than now.
			The project is still very young so the things that will happen are not at all
			fixed. It pretty much depends on the women who will join and contribute.
			Some possible topics are graphics, themes, user howtos, ... we will set up a
			TODO list very soon.</answer>

			<question from="annma">Hmmmmm
			<intnote>I don't want to upset her because when she sees red, it's getting very \
hot nearby</intnote> And what about men?
			<intnote>I step backward, waiting.... but she answers very \
nicely.</intnote></question>  <answer from="Katie">Laughing (which is quite scary) \
Men, what's that? No, seriously, we don't want to separate from KDE and everyone in \
my team is in fact involved in other projects within KDE. We are of course \
interested in an interchange of ideas and opinions. This project wants to coordinate \
the work of women as a part of the overall KDE project and want to help women to get \
started. Since the meaning is not to "occupy" some areas, the input of men is very \
welcome.</answer>

			<question from="annma">And why the name kde-women and not for example \
kde-newbie?</question> <answer from="Katie">The site is totally driven by women. And \
this is where the name comes from. The project is _by_ women, but not _for_ women \
_only_ - it is for everybody. This is meant as an addition to KDE, no seperation.
			KDE wants to be a desktop for everybody and I think it only can gain from
			female input.</answer>
			<question from="annma">How do you communicate?</question>
			<answer from="Katie">We meet on the IRC channel #kde-women (irc.openprojects.net), \
everyone is welcome of course. The channel is very friendly and we have men there, \
of course! We speak about KDE, we ask questions that bother us at the time, we also \
speak about other subjects and it's very entertaining. I often have a good laugh in \
front of my screen!!!! We also have a mailing list.</answer>

			<question from="annma">What do you want to achieve?</question>
			<answer from="Katie">First of all we want to get more women (or women at all) \
involved into the development of KDE. Up to now there was only a low percentage (or \
per mille?) of women in the KDE team and no female core developer. And the idea is \
not only to get women to the "usual female" jobs like designers, documentation
			writers, journalists, but into every part of KDE.<lbr />
			We want to provide some space for women to express their views. We want that in \
the long run, more women get involved in more areas in KDE and we hope to be a sort \
of launching pad. All the KDE projects are great fun because there is always \
something for everyone to do whatever the level, the age, ect. So please, do join \
us, don't miss the chance to be part of this exciting adventure!</answer>

			<question from="annma">Thank you very much, Katie and good luck with the \
project!</question>  </interview>
