--Beware this turns into a rant-- An honest opinion about the state of KDE's
marketing and www --

This to me sparks a turning point with our marketing.

I don't think an excuse that everyone is busy counts for us at all. I fail to
see any core group of promoters activly working on promoting KDE in a fresh
unique style. Similarily it is the same on the website stand of things and at
the moment not to be a moaner but there is hardly any work getting done
around here. For instance, a few emails back, there was a topic about hardly
anything picking up about Akademy and with KDE 4 on the horizon there is
hardly much in preparation - apart from Troy's articles - they are good.

If people are busy, why don't we get new people to fill the gaps in. Like
Pier-Olivier he had some great ideas to present to the table and pretty much
the lack of 'creative' contribution has left the projects half finished. Look
at Spreadkde, ages ago we had asked for help for feedback and what people
wanted for managing events.

Looking at that, is there much point having Spreadkde, it was deemed from
creation as a tool - at the moment it has just become a resource and a tool
for managing events. Originally we envisioned getting the absolute 'kde
newbies' involved, doing small things, but forced by a community who wanted
it to be just used by a marketing team, the excitement has dwindled. By the
poor response, we have lost the motivation to work on it and because it is
just a 'plain' hardly elaborate system.

Similarly the lack luster of work applies on the www side of things. Apart
from Rainer who has recently worked on improving the template, the only thing
that has really developed has been just maintenance of content. Nothing new
apart from discover.kde.org, but how far will that get?

I don't think that we should just limit ourselves to such as small community,
and getting people in who aren't busy to fill the void, who has some
expertise or not would be useful.

I am personally disappointed of Pier-Olivier leaving, and remembering back
there was the ideas of fork-nightly meetings. There was only one, and to be
truthful it wasn't really a great success - it was lengthy and to be honest
not interesting. Similarily as a 'vibrant' community we should try and
embrace creative and new ideas, and try to be more supportive of each other.

A recent example is with the artwork - fair enough the Oxygen guys are very
busy, but how do we expect people to envision a design when they have little
experience in graphic design and don't have on hand support. It also makes
the work more difficult for other people to envision (like I just said), but
it takes a lot more time - then they have to explain that their layout isn't
brilliant.

There are a lot of outfixing problems, that I have lived with for the past
year or more - and KDE's marketing is struggling because of it. I don't want
to bad mouth people, or insult anyone but it is time to realise that
something needs to change. I don't want ever to start a flame war.
