Which is down, and just at day when I would have needed it desperately!

Where should I put these KDEDIRS variables in RedHat? Into 
/etc/sysconfig/desktop ? I once tried and it didn't work, at
least when I checked the shell. Could it be that it's in windowmanager's
environment but not in shell?
