Unfortunately it fails at the very last minute:

Well, yes that does not even seem to be hard to do on Mac, but it would
mean that no pre-compiled add-ons will be installable, later. Ok for
some users, not for others.

I'll look into that. In either case I'm going to have to provide some
Mac special casing. _If_ I get a dmg installer to work, that would now
go into binary/_mac/r-base/, right? If I go for source compilation,
should r-base be moved to dev-util, or is there a better category?
