In principle I totally agree, but....

My main laptop uses Windows, purely because it is not possible to run
my dongle-protected essential software.

I installed the installer last year, but I'm not comfortable with it.
 The reason is that I get the impression that a lot more applications
are available for Windows than I see listed there.  Either the
installer running doesn't have the required information to offer me
them, or it is too old a version of the installer and I don't know how
to get it updated.  I did try uninstalling it and reinstalling, but
that didn't help.

I have enough problems with the fact that my Windows skills are very
rusty, but my frustrations perhaps will hint at the experience of
other users.

BTW, nice-to-have would be automatic update checking of apps - even if
it couldn't handle the actual update, a note telling you that one is
available at xyz...   :-)
