The system is a 750MHz Duron/256MB RAM/SuSE v7.1/XFree 86 v 3.1.0/RIVA TNT2
M64 chip set /32MB RAM on card. I'm having a strange problem (at least
strange to me, probably due to a lack of knowledge).

I needed to upgrade XFree86 to 4.x in order to use OpenGL for a molecular
graphics program. I also installed a new video card to support OpenGL, the
Paulit Daytona TNT2 M64. Sax2 found the card and the chip set, although I
had to tell it that the monitor is a KDS KD-7300 (after being told Sax2 had
the correct horiz and vert values). Further, I managed to configure the
window for a resolution of 1600x1200 (and I know that was the case as I
looked at the resolution in the KDE2.2 Control Center).

Now at that point, I should have left well enough alone (or at least saved
XF86Config), but I was still encountering OpenGL driver troubles, a
separate issue, and I didn't.

Leaping ahead a couple of days, and a number of frustrations, I find that
the maximum resolution that I can seem to coax out of the board is
1400x1050. That's not bad, but I know that the system can do better. If I
use xf86config I can specify a screen resolution of 1600x1200, but I have
two config files; /etc/XF86Config, which has 1400x1050,
/etc/X11/XF86Config, which has the xf86config specified resolution of
1600x1200.

I thought that it was obvious that the /etc/XF86Config file was being used
so I changed it's name to XF86Config.0, thinking that the system would
default to the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. Nice theory, but as many of my
theories, turned out to need more work - the resolution is still 1400x1050.

Near the end of XFree86.0.log (attached to this message) I find:

(II) NV(0): Not using mode "1600x1200" (no mode of this name)
(--) NV(0): Virtual size is 1400x1050 (pitch 1408)
(**) NV(0): Default mode "1400x1050": 122.0 MHz, 64.9 kHz, 60.0 Hz

At this point I'd totally baffled (admittedly, it doesn't take much
confusion to baffle me), all that I know is that at one time I could get a
screen resolution of 1600x1200

Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
