Kyle,

Thank you, this looks very promising, I had wondered about the
splash screen as this is only thing left that looks like it
takes a lot of colours.  I'll experiment with this and see what
happens.  In the longer term a restrict_colours option would be
useful in the KDE set up and I suppose in the longer longer term
all display will be 24 bit or better.
